Virtual Charity Drive: Think Globally, Act Locally

 

Hello Berkeley Knights!
 

In conjunction with National Distance Learning Week, Berkeley College Online is making a difference globally by connecting our students around the world in an effort to feed, clothe, and bring cheer to needy families this holiday season.

 We encourage you to “think globally, act locally” by donating canned goods, used clothes or toys to local community centers, soup kitchens, and other non-profits committed to helping families in need.


4 EASY STEPS TO PARTICIPATE:

1.      Photograph the items you are donating to charity this season!

2.      Send the photo, your name, and the name and location of the charitable organization you are donating to ONLCommunityservice@berkeleycollege.edu.

3.      Berkeley College Online will donate $1 in groceries to St. Peter's Haven in Clifton, New Jersey for every donated item of food, clothing, and toys captured in a photo we receive between November 15th and November 27th, up to a maximum total donation of $300 (limit of $3 per donor).  Donation photos sent through December 31, 2013 will be accepted but not matched.

4.      All of the photos we receive will be used to create a visual collage to be posted online!


Additional Terms:
Submitted photos become the sole property of the college and will not be returned.
The college shall have all rights associated with ownership, including the unrestricted,
perpetual, worldwide rights to duplicate, publicly display or create derivative
works from submitted photos. Participants waive all rights of privacy
and publicity, including rights under the Family Educational Rights
 and Privacy Act (“FERPA”). Berkeley College has the sole right to determine
 eligibility and shall not be liable for damages of any kind in connection with this program.

Veteran’s Day Parade 2013

My name is Sharla Hanley, I am 34 years of age and I am a volunteer for Berkeley Cares. I have been doing volunteer work for a long time and when I decided to start college again, that did not leave me. One of the things I love to do is help others that cannot help themselves.

This past Monday November 11, I volunteered for the Veteran’s Day Parade as a Parade Marshal.  The day started out cold. As I walked down 5th Avenue from Berkeley College, I saw the NYPD putting up the barricades so all traffic can be stopped. 

Our job was to keep the marchers in line until it was their time to go on the route. The parade marshal has a very important job, because without them, the parade would not go on.  It was cold that day as it is every year, but we know that we came to do a job, and that is exactly what I did. 

I love to be a parade marshal and this was my second time being a part of that spectacular parade to support vets all around the country. The Veterans Day parade brings many people together, not just New Yorkers.  I met people from as far away as California and the high school bands all the way from Illinois. As they marched up from 23^rd street to 52nd street, many people gathered on the streets of New York to watch them pass by and say thanks for serving our country well.

I will continue to be a volunteer even after I leave Berkeley College, and I would love to leave a legacy behind. Anybody can help, and lend a helping hand, and if you love what you do then you would not think about getting paid for doing it. My resume is filling up with all kinds of volunteer work that I have been involved with through Berkeley cares. 

Find something to do. As President John F. Kennedy said “Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country.” It will be worth it.

You will need to enter your email address as well as your full date of birth using the drop down arrow buttons located to the right of “Month”, “Day” and “Year”

To sign up:
1. Select the link from below – Hold ‘Ctrl key and click’ to activate link.
2. Once on the “Members for Life” page enter your email address.
3. Enter your date of birth.
4. Enter sponsor code (below) Click the “Login” button. (If this is not your first time signing up go to step 8)

Message from the President: Berkeley Cares About the Philippines

Dear Members of the College Community,

 
Our hearts go out to the people of the Philippines whose lives have been devastated by Typhoon Haiyan. Our thoughts, prayers and sympathies are with our Filipino colleagues and our students who have been impacted by this disaster.

The losses may be incomprehensible, but the resilience of the Filipino people, along with the help of the United States, friends and allies from around the world, will light the path to recovery.

At Berkeley College, we will be offering our support to the Philippines through Berkeley Cares. In the coming weeks, Berkeley Cares will be conducting a fundraising drive at all campus locations for the American Red Cross Typhoon Haiyan relief effort. These funds will be used to distribute food, clothing and other necessary supplies, repair and rebuild shelters, provide healthcare and ensure access to clean water and sanitation systems.

There are many ways we can contribute to relief efforts in the Philippines, locally and globally. Together, we can make a difference.
